WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

While working with multiple groups not only across the county, but also the state and region, the One Dearborn Workforce Team is taking steps to understand the area’s workforce.  We have taken steps to understand the shortage of available workers, which skills are necessary but difficult to attract locally, and the complex issues that contribute to attracting a talent pool (wages, transportation, socioeconomic, education, etc.).

One Dearborn understands the necessity to build a more comprehensive approach to long term population growth and workforce development.  This is why there is a commitment to bring together the best and most experienced leaders throughout the region to develop a comprehensive approach.  One Dearborn understands the need to get creative while assisting a business when building their team.  

WORKFORCE FOR THE FUTURE

Within Dearborn County, One Dearborn has formed close relationships with Ivy Tech Community College and the Work One centers.  Through these invaluable relationships, both regional and state resources have been explored further:

 

Ivy Tech Community College

One of the greatest assets to Dearborn County is Ivy Tech Community College. 

They have seen a recent restructuring that now includes 19 campuses.

  • The southeast Indiana region has three locations. The main campus is located in Lawrenceburg with second building in town too. However, Batesville also has a location.
  • Each regional campus employs a workforce consultant.

 

Ivy Tech offers company trainings, internship assistance and each summer they host a camp for middle school students.

  • The summer camp is geared towards generating exposure within the manufacturing industry.
  • This past June saw 60 kids participate between the two locations in Batesville and Lawrenceburg.

 

They also are creating pathway programs within local high schools. The areas of interest include:

  • Healthcare
  • Information Technology
  • Manufacturing
  • Welding

 

Ivy Tech ensures that their student possess the necessary soft skills for a seamless transition into the workforce through their Career Ready Endorsement.

  • This program ensures that the basic facets of professionalism are taught.
  • Over four semesters, student complete a series of coursework and a host of in-person activities. These may include job shadowing, mock interviews, meeting with a mentor, meeting with a career advisor or touring a facility.
  • This is also beneficial to the students, as employers partner with the college to offer priority interviews for those who complete the program.

 

Additionally, Ivy Tech has formed partnership with other area universities.

  • Indiana University East
    Business Administration, Communication Studies, Education, Nursing and Psychology
  • Northern Kentucky University
    Biology and Chemistry

 

Any student from a border county will also receive in-state tuition.

  • Kentucky
    Boone, Bracken, Campbell, Carroll, Gallatin, Grant, Henry, Kenton, Oldham, Owen, Pendleton and Trimble Counties
  • Ohio
    Butler, Darke, Hamilton, Mercer, Montgomery, Preble, Shelby and Van Wert Counties

One Dearborn, Inc. is located within the same building as WorkOne.  The WorkOne Center is the heart of the workforce development system. It’s where WorkOne staff help you find a new or better job, choose a career, access training or get the information needed to succeed in today’s job market.  They also offer the following resources:

Southeast Indiana Workforce Board

The Southeast Indiana Workforce Board is held up as an example to other regions for its innovative programs around workforce development. 

 

State of Indiana

In the summer of 2017, Next Level Jobs launched the Employer Training Grants program.  Over the course of one year, they have given nearly 400 businesses a grant and trained more than 5,000 of their employees.
